#WomenCanStopTrump, Can’t They?

Analyzing the creation of political togetherness through Twitter hashtags:
The 2016 presidential election cycle was a time for hashtag feminism — and for hashtags in general: #ImWithHer, #ShesWithUs, #PantsuitNation, #TheFutureIsFemale, etc. Using sentiment analysis, this study examines a pool of 30,000 tweets using the hashtag #WomenCanStopTrump collected during the months before and after November 8, 2016, to analyze the female-led discourse about the role of women in political activism during that season; then, it compares that data with the ultimate voter turnout rate and results for women across the nation. This research applies scholar Lauren Berlants’ notion of “intimate publics,” or the effect of feeling public together, to the realm of politically motivated digital discourse.
